I’m done with my port

Today I had my port removed. The procedure went really well, and I’m home now resting. But it definitely brought up memories that I hadn’t thought of in awhile.

A “port” is basically a fancy IV that is placed just below your shoulder, and it allows medical professionals to access it to administer meds, take blood, etc. without doing a traditional IV in your arm. Accessing the port is virtually pain free. Because of the number of treatments I had with chemotherapy, having a port was a huge blessing.

Having your port removed signifies a new chapter. I’m still trying to wrap my head around actually being cancer free, and this surgery helps to really solidify it.

While I was waiting in pre-op, I overheard a doctor talking to another patient who was getting her port put in. He explained what it is, where they put it, what it’s made of (squishy plastic) and what to expect. As he was talking, it was a surreal trip down memory lane, because I was that person four months ago.
